Consumers could book longer flights to get more value for money.
Tourists looking to get the most out of their budget for a holiday may find that longer flights offer greater value for money than shorter trips.
Chris Nixon, managing director at price comparison website Kelkoo Travel, stated that many people do not take this into account, which is why they fly to closer destinations as they think it will be saving them money overall on the break.
But he claimed that studies have shown it is more expensive - by up to 75 per cent - on a cost-per-mile basis to travel to a short-haul location, rather than one that is much further away.
"Consumers should also consider the cost of living in the country they are considering visiting - venturing further afield to places such as Thailand not only provides better value for money in terms of the flight, but the cost of accommodation, food and leisure activities and so on are generally found to be lower there too," added the holiday expert.
Kelkoo's Best Value Flight Index showed that long-haul journeys have an average cost of 14.5 pence per nautical mile, compared to 25.3 pence for shorter trips.
This news could encourage people to book holidays to China, as this is one of the furthest countries away from the UK and flights may prove to be good value.
The China Guide recently claimed that it is a great time to travel to Beijing, due to the weather the Asian nation experiences at this time of year.
It recommended seeing the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven on a break in the city.
