TripAdvisor has revealed which European castle hotels are the most popular among its editors and website users.
The top ten castle hotels in Europe have been revealed by TripAdvisor, based on comments from its editors and travellers.
France dominates the top ten, with the Chateau des Ormeaux, Chateau de Verrieres and Chateau de La Villaine - all in the Loire Valley, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site - making it into the list.
Two Spanish establishments - Parador de Cardona in Cardona and Parador de Jaen in Jaen - were also included in the rankings, as were the Castle Hotel Auf Schonburg in Oberwesel, Germany, along with Ashford Castle in Cong, Ireland
and the Castelletto di Montebenichi in Bucine, Italy.
For those looking to take out
travel insurance for a castle stay in England, Thornbury Castle in Gloucestershire - the only Tudor castle to be opened as a hotel - was named by TripAdvisor as a top pick.
Emma O'Boyle, spokesperson for TripAdvisor, said the castle hotels in the list should appeal to holidaymakers of all kinds, "whether you're a die-hard history buff hoping to experience some authentic sights or simply looking to enjoy a weekend in a grand mansion".
