The watery city of Stockholm "is surprisingly sensuous"
Stockholm is "surprisingly sensuous" and a baroque-lover's paradise, a travel writer has said.
A trip to the Skokloster Castle is not to be missed, wrote Waldemar Januszczak for the Times, as it is an "intense pleasure".
Mr Januszczak went on to say that Stockholm has a lot more to offer travellers than they might imagine and he believes it is the only city that truly deserves the title of the Venice of the North.
"The Swedish capital has a stunning waterside setting, stylish locals, achingly trendy design shops and sophisticated nightlife," he explained.
For those wanting to get the best views of the city, Mr Januszczak recommends taking to the water or hiring a kayak from the former prison island of Langholmen.
According to VisitStockholm, the water among the 14 islands of the city is so clean it is possible to catch salmon.
There are over 100 museums for visitors in the city, including Drottningholm Palace, where the Swedish Royal family resides.
