Thailand, USA and Portugal 'popular destinations in 2009'
Los Angeles, Bangkok and Porto are the top three most popular destinations for British travel insurance customers this summer, a travel website has revealed.
Flights to Thailand surged by 271 per cent this holiday season compared to 2008 and the USA and Portugal saw 170 per cent and 163 per cent increases respectively, according to Skyscanner.
Holidays to Bangkok - which used to be a typical backpacker destination - appear to be appealing to families and couples as a mainstream resort, added the website.
Turkey also had three destinations in the biggest rising summer holiday destinations for this year.
"It's already an established tourist destination and has the sun, sea and sand that Greece and Spain offer, with the added buzzword of being non-euro," said Barry Smith, co-founder of the company.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Thailand received around 812,000 British tourists last year and the main areas for people requiring consular assistance were Bangkok, Pattaya and Koh Samui.
Comprehensive travel insurance is advised for all travel to Thailand.
