Backpackers head to Thailand for a down to earth experience, the country's tourist board has suggested.
Thailand is attractive to those on a gap year because it offers a number of down to earth experiences, it has been suggested.
Some 750,000 people from the UK visit the country every year, many of whom are backpackers.
Chris Lee, marketing adviser for the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), called the nation a "sophisticated" option for students looking to "get involved with cultural tourism, do home stays and get a much more down to earth product".
He also highlighted the value for money offered by the country, where a bottle of beer costs 90p and a meal for two comes to about £7.50.
Taking out cheap
gap year travel insurance could also bring expenses down.
According to figures released by the TAT last month, holidaymakers who head to Thailand stay in the country for an average of 13 nights.
It launched a new campaign to get more people to take advantage of Thailand's value for money earlier this year.
