Tenerife still continues to attract crowds of British holidaymakers, according to one expert.
Tenerife in the Canary Islands is still a particularly popular destination among Britons.
This is according to the Tenerife Tourism Corporation, which says that while 2009 has seen slightly lower British arrivals than in previous years, the UK is still the largest market for the island.
According to figures from the Canary Islands Tourist Board, 45.4 per cent of Britons visiting the region head to Tenerife.
Those visiting Tenerife will find that the island has changed significantly in the last decade, Arantxa Martin of the Tenerife Tourism Corporation said.
"We have new resorts and there are some areas for upmarket clients on the beach with golf courses. We have the biggest hotels in Spain in Tenerife," she explained.
The island also has more five-star hotels than Barcelona and water sports are available year-round, she added.
Holidaymakers heading to Tenerife may want to take out
travel insurance if they do decide to try out active pursuits such as golf and water-based activities.
