Take extra care when driving in Europe, travellers advised
With a third of British travellers planning on taking to the roads on their European holiday this summer, drivers are being urged to undertake some preparation in advance, it has been reported.
"Research the destination before travelling to make yourself aware of any local rules regarding parking and road tolls as well as road rules and unfamiliar road signs," explained Tim Uden, managing editor of the Backpackers Ultimate Guide.
Mr Uden went on to say that although it usually only takes a day or two to become accustomed to driving on the other side of the road, holidaymakers with European travel insurance may need to take a little extra care during this time at hazards such as roundabouts and at junctions.
He suggested that if travellers are visiting a big city in a foreign country on a day trip, they should leave the car on the outskirts of the town to save money on parking and to avoid the stresses of heavy traffic.
Figures from the RAC, published in July, revealed that a third of people planning to drive in a European country this year were unaware of the emergency services phone number in their destination country.
A further 35 per cent admitted to not knowing what they are supposed to do if they have an accident abroad.
