Swine flu highlights importance of travel insurance
Worries over the spread of swine flu and the cancellation of travel to Mexico have highlighted the importance of taking out travel insurance, a comparison site has said.
"For people who risk travelling with no cover, this serious situation should demonstrate how important insurance is should you be taken ill when away, or are prevented from going at all," said Steve Williams, head of travel insurance at Confused.com.
Mr Williams went on to say that travel insurance is not an expensive product and it is an unnecessary risk to make holiday plans without purchasing cover.
According to figures from the company, travel insurance quotes rose by 62 per cent between Sunday April 26th and Monday April 27th.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have now advised against all non-essential travel to Mexico and travel policies purchased after this announcement may not offer insurance cover to the area.
However, Mr Williams added that it proves travel insurance is a crucial product and travellers should continue to purchase policies for all other destinations.
According to CNN, internationally, common seasonal flu is responsible for the deaths of 250,000 to 500,000 people annually.
