Still 'many people going on foreign holidays this year'
Although the summer will see a drop in the number of people taking a foreign holiday in 2009, there are still plenty of people jetting off abroad, a travel industry association has said.
"People do appreciate what is on their doorstep as well. It looks like we might have a nice summer and I'm sure that maybe influences people [to holiday in the UK]," said Ian Bradley, spokesperson for the Association of Independent Travel Operators.
However, he went on to say that there will not be nearly as many people taking a Staycation and not going abroad as predicted.
Despite this, the UK holiday market will have a "strong summer", he explained.
UK travellers expect to spend an average of £567 on their holiday in 2009, compared to £631 in 2008, figures from Travelodge suggested.
According to research from Axa, the average cost of a medical claim by travel insurance customers who holiday in the USA will amount to £1,702.
Cheap holiday insurance from Direct Travel Insurance could be one way to keep total holiday expenditure down.
