Social networking 'could encourage more adventurous travel'
The rise in the popularity of social networking sites could be encouraging travel insurance customers to head to further away destinations, a travel company has said.
Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at Expedia.co.uk, said that websites such as Facebook and Twitter "make the world smaller so people are more likely to venture out of their comfort zone".
Mr Cudworth thought that by nature, people from the UK were "not very adventurous" but social networking "could only encourage people to explore the world".
He added that television programmes have historically been a good source of information for travel destinations and the websites were acting as a supplement to this resource.
A report from Lastminute.com published in May revealed 42 per cent of young people spend their relaxation time constantly updating their profiles on Twitter and Facebook.
Recent statistics from InsureandGo found uninsured British travellers faced £90 million worth of costs due to holiday disasters in 2008.
Cheap travel insurance from Direct Travel Insurance could be one way to keep total holiday expenditure down.
