London's main airport has seen severe travel chaos as a result of poor weather.
Snow and ice have been causing travel chaos at London's biggest airport and passengers have been stranded overnight.
BAA states a limited number of flights are expected to take off from Heathrow Airport today (December 20th) but delays and cancellations are to be expected.
Travel insurance policyholders with confirmed bookings should contact their airline to determine whether arriving at the airport is indeed the correct course of action. And anyone that has not made reservations should stay away.
Christmas travel plans have been ruined for many consumers, some of whom spent last night sleeping on terminal floors beneath blankets that had been handed out.
The
Foreign and Commonwealth Office reports that all UK airports remain open as of 06:00 GMT this morning, but cancellations and delays are in place, while travel in France, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Germany have also been affected by severe weather.
Spokesman for BAA, Andrew Teacher, told the BBC: "We had five inches of snow in an hour on Saturday afternoon and hundreds of planes parked [at the time]."
He pointed out that this is an extraordinary amount of snowfall in a short period of time, adding that the same conditions would cause disruption no matter where in the world they occurred.
Meanwhile, the
Met Office has issued its highest level of weather warning for parts of south-west England, where it predicts very heavy snow and widespread icy roads that could cause severe travel chaos.
Other regions are on an orange alert, which states residents of affected areas should be prepared for disruption as a result of adverse weather conditions.
