Fewer people to head off on city breaks in 2012 as they look to save money.
The city break, more popular in recent years due to the massive popularity of programmes such as Sex and the City, could lose some of its popularity this year due to the fact that many people will need to cut back on their extra holidays.
According to TravelSupermarket, which surveyed 5,000 holidaymakers, only eight per cent of travel insurance customers are planning to take a city break in 2012, as money gets tighter. This shows a decrease when compared to the 11 per cent of holidaymakers who took a city break in 2011.
Bob Atkinson, of TravelSupermarket, said that the number of people who go on holidays of less than seven nights will see a significant decrease, as people look to get more value for money from their holidays this year.
He said that other shorter breaks abroad could also decrease in popularity.
"Perhaps thought of as an 'extra' break the research also shows a reduction in the number of people going away for stag and hen dos, nights away for a special occasion and for friends or family weddings."
Last week, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), said in its Travel Trends 2012 report that there would be an increase in people looking for value for money holidays in 2012. It said that middle of the road holidays would see the biggest decline, with an increase in the number of people looking for either budget holidays, or high end trips which offer something unique.
The most popular kind of holidays for Brits are still beach holidays though, with 37 per cent still favouring these. Those looking to save monev are reportedly turning to all inclusive and self catering holidays to cut down what they spend when they are abroad.
