More grit and salt has been made available in Scotland to help combat a further cold snap.

The Scottish government has released information about how it will prepare for the possibility that the country could be gripped by another cold snap.

First minister Alex Salmond said: "We are ready for whatever the rest of the winter may throw at us," explaining that authorities have ordered more supplies of grit and salt, bringing levels in stock or on order to 435,000 tonnes.

In comparison, during the winter months so far, some 400,000 tonnes have already been spread as a result of heavy snowfall and "unprecedented" adverse conditions.

Mr Salmond added that the government's Ministerial Resilience Committee has been meeting regularly to keep the country on the move with regards to its roads, salt and water supplies, aviation, rail travel and fuel delivery.

North of the border, December 2010 was the coldest on record, according to the Met Office, while it proved the second-coldest in a century.

Individuals could face more travel chaos in coming days, as the body has issued flash warnings of severe or extreme weather for most of Scotland and Northern Ireland, while five to ten centimetres of snow could fall on high ground in coming days.

Heavy snow and widespread icy roads could cause commuter misery on surfaces today (Wednesday January 5th) and untreated areas could prove slippery in the rest of the UK, particularly in the morning, the Met Office has stated.

Holiday insurance policyholders hoping to set off today could do well to monitor the conditions to ensure their journey will be safe and they are prepared whatever the weather.
