San Francisco is a popular holiday destination thanks to its European feel, according to the city's tourism board.
San Francisco attracts holidaymakers in their droves due to its cosmopolitan feel.
This is according to the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, which says that the city has a diverse arts scene, culture and cuisine that brings Europe to mind.
"It's always been popular with the British - Rudyard Kipling, Oscar Wilde and even Sherlock Holmes romanticised about San Francisco," explains Tanya Houseman, media relations manager at the organisation.
She adds that there is a variety of things to see and do in San Francisco, including taking in Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and Union Square.
Travellers may also want to go on a cruise around the bay, ride the cable cars and check out the city's various neighbourhoods, Ms Houseman suggests.
Those looking to head to San Francisco may want to take out
holiday insurance - particularly as medical expenses for those who do not have such cover can run into tens of thousands of pounds in the event of an accident or illness.
Figures from STR show that the San Francisco/San Mateo area of California saw the largest increase in hotel occupancy rates in the US during February, registering a 65.2 per cent surge compared with last year.
