Sailing enthusiasts could head to the Isle of Wight on holiday

Sailing pursuits are available on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight provides some of the UK's best weather and sailing opportunities, according to an expert.

Travellers keen on pursuing adventurous activities while on holiday could do well to book a break to the Isle of Wight, according to one expert.

Amanda Bradbeer, partner and yachtmaster at the Cowes Sailing School, explained that the region receives some of the UK's best summer weather, which could encourage people to participate in the water sports on offer.

"We have sheltered waters because the south of England is protected by the Isle of Wight, so we have a lovely area called the Solent, which is our protected sailing area," she explained.

However, the unpredictable British climate need not dampen the spirits of participants, as yachting can take place whatever the conditions.

Indeed, this may be the case for those attending Cowes Week which is "quite a big regatta", where between 800 and 900 vessels enter a race, according to Ms Bradbeer.

Anyone considering a break where sporting activities like boating are on the agenda should check their single trip insurance policy covers them for any eventuality before setting off.

Meanwhile, Lesley Curwen, the presenter of Business Daily for BBC World Service, recently arrived on the island to see the Extreme 40 racing series.

Of her adventure onto the boats, she said: "It was a short, sharp and ferocious introduction to competitive sailing, but the adrenaline high was spectacular."

But travellers who would prefer to keep their feet dry may wish to schedule a stop at the Classic Car Extravaganza, which takes place on the island on September 18th and 19th.
