Rajasthan's blue views "sublime"

The Blue City of Rajasthan in India offers a wonderful treat for the eyes, according to one travel writer.

Tim Jepson put the spotlight on the town of Jodhpur as part of the Telegraph's One-minute wonder series and claimed the effect created by its mysterious blue-painted houses is "sublime".

Nobody knows exactly why locals began painting their homes in indigo, but the unique sight has helped Jodhpur to become one of India's most popular tourist destinations.

There is much more to do in the city than simply take in these houses, however, with Mehrangarh Fort, the Umaid Bhawan Palace and the Osiyan Temple among some of its best known attractions.

Mr Jepson actually recommended that those looking for a "treat" should stay at Umaid Bhawan, which is now a luxury hotel, made particularly famous as the setting for Liz Hurley's wedding.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office website urges those visiting India to obtain travel insurance and warns against visiting certain parts of the country, such as anywhere along the border with Pakistan.ADNFCR-2301-ID-19109700-ADNFCR
