Many people taking a gap year do not take sufficient funds, one industry spokesperson has said.
Brits who are planning on taking out
backpacker insurance for a spell of travelling and volunteer work should try to raise funds before they go, it has been suggested.
Katie Mossman, spokesperson from i-to-i, a company that offers volunteer projects to travellers, said that often, by the time people arrive at the destination, much of their funds have already been spent on the way.
"The trouble comes when they try to plan too much in too short time," she explained.
"So we encourage them to do a lot of fundraising before they go," Ms Mossman continued.
As well as taking out backpacker insurance, she advised travellers to take a combination of a credit or debit card, traveller's cheques and cash.
The International Currency Exchange reported earlier this week that more people are set to take a gap year this year due to fewer places available at universities.
It advised school leavers to be wary of their money when travelling, especially of credit and debit card fraud.
