Travel insurance policyholders might like to consider a break in Puerto Rico, as the country has witnessed a increase in tourism recently.
Nicole Rodriguez, chief marketing officer at Puerto Rico Tourism Company, explains there was a rise of four per cent this year in the number of European visitors.
This is despite the tough conditions in the global economy, which could have had an impact on statistics.
Ms Rodriguez says research indicates the average stay for an overseas break tends to be between eight and ten days, but this may have been shortened slightly due to a lack of finances.
British Airways recent began offering twice-weekly flights via Antigua and Virgin host JetBlue flights from New York, making it easy for people to reach their chosen location.
The expert says there is an aim to inform the UK market that Puerto Rico is not as far away as they might think and has plenty to offer people of all tastes.
"It's a beautiful place that has a lot more to offer than great drinks and beaches – once you're there you'll get what we're saying," Ms Rodriguez continues.
It can easily compete with large Caribbean destinations such as the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, as there is a different feel to the nation.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises those travelling to the British Virgin Islands that there are limited medical facilities, so cases tend to be referred to Puerto Rico.
This may be of interest to those keen to be informed about such matters before choosing their holiday spot.
And they would also be wise to take out a travel insurance policy to provide cover in such circumstances.
