Don't get caught out by failing to be ready for any eventuality.
With Christmas just around the corner, millions of Brits will be flooding overseas to take in either the sun or the slopes after the Christmas presents have been handed out.
Last week, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said that 4.25 million people will be jetting out of the UK this festive period to catch a winter holiday, with this weekend being the busiest travel period for those looking to get away, and the majority heading to European ski destinations.
Now, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is urging those who are about to hit the slopes to make sure they have suitable insurance before they do so. It says that many people rely on annual travel insurance policies to cover them.
However, the ABI has advised those who are looking to head off on snow sports breaks to make sure that they have dedicated winter sports cover. It says that 31 per cent of people wrongly believe that they are covered for injuries caused on the slope by standard travel insurance policy.
It also says that the cost of injuries to those who are not properly insured with dedicated ski insurance could see people in serious financial problems. Healthcare and repatriation to the UK for someone who breaks their back in France could cost them over £9,000, while someone breaking their leg in the US could face charges of up to £18,220 for the same treatment.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI, said: "Before setting off to the slopes for the busy ski season, avoid skipping on essential cover and ruining your winter escape. The cost of medical treatment for ski injuries could put most people out of pocket, so it's vital to ensure you have adequate winter sports cover."
