More should be done by travel agents to encourage holidaymakers to have the relevant vaccinations, according to the Post Office.
The Post Office has called on travel agents to do more to raise awareness of the need to have vaccinations before visiting certain destinations.
It recently released a report showing that 44 per cent of travellers do not research vaccines before going overseas.
Rachel Croft, head of Post Office Travel Insurance, said part of the reason for this might be because more consumers are booking holidays online rather than through a traditional high street travel agent.
She went on to explain the potential consequences of not researching vaccines on
travel insurance policies.
"If you were ill abroad and you haven't taken malaria tablets, the insurance company can potentially say that you should have taken those tablets and if you haven't, they won't pick up that claim," Ms Croft commented.
The Post Office's study found that 56 per cent of holidaymakers cannot correctly identify which destinations need vaccinations, with 94 per cent unaware of the need for tetanus and hepatitis A vaccines in Slovenia and Bulgaria.
Almost one-third said they could not remember which diseases they had been vaccinated against.
