Excess baggage charges top the millions as Brits pack too much reading material for their break, it has been announced.
Holidaymakers struggling to fit all of their clothes, accessories and possessions into their suitcases could make some extra room by taking fewer books, one company has suggested.
On average, British
travel insurance holders take three different books with them when they go on holiday, when in fact, many will only get through the pages of one or two.
These figures come from research carried out by Hotels.com, which explained that travellers could be wasting as much as £1.5 million in excess baggage costs by carrying all of this unnecessary reading material.
An extra pair of flip flops and a bottle of sun cream could be packed instead of that additional paperback - weighing an average of 340 grams.
"Reading is a great way to unwind on holiday but perhaps holidaymakers should be realistic about how many books they need to take with them and save themselves from being charged extra," advised Alison Couper, communications director at the company.
According to the Greek National Tourism Organisation, Greece is a popular destination among British travellers and they make up 20 per cent of all foreign visitors to the country.
Cheap holiday insurance from Direct Travel Insurance could be one way to keep total holiday expenditure down.
