One in five Brits 'unsure of holiday destination location'
Many Britons - 950,000 - have faced the disappointment of accidentally arriving at the wrong destination or have booked a hotel for a different resort, research from travelsupermarket.com has indicated.
In addition, 1.9 million people have arrived at their holiday destination with the wrong kind of foreign currency.
"With finances front of mind at the moment, finding you are in the wrong place after spending time and money planning a dream break could prove very disappointing," said Bob Atkinson, travel expert at the company.
He recommended travel insurance customers perform a simple internet search about where they are going to make sure they are not confusing London UK with London Canada or Palma in Majorca with La Palma in the Canaries.
Tourists on the east coast of the USA who do not take out a travel insurance policy could find themselves facing costs of between £35,000 and £40,000 for an air ambulance should anything go wrong, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
