Northern Thailand treks 'off the beaten path'
Travellers in Thailand who want an alternative experience should head north for a trek, according to a travel writer.
In an article for Canwest News Service, Elaine O'Connor said that the northern highlands will give visitors a chance to go off the beaten track with "eco-tour treks".
She explained that this will let them experience life among the rural hill tribes who live in the area between Laos and Myanmar.
Ms O'Connor described how she drank tea from a bamboo pole cup, slept on a bamboo floor, rode an elephant and saw jungle waterfalls and rice paddies on her three-day trek in the north of the country.
According to Thailand for Visitors, the north "contrast greatly" with the more commercial nature of Bangkok.
Chiang Mai, the ancient capital, is a popular location where tourists can visit craft factories.
