New techniques introduced to prevent winter travel chaos in Scotland

A new solution to extreme temperatures has been developed

Techniques to deal with extremely low temperatures in Scotland have been introduced with a view to preventing winter travel chaos.

A liquid solution that can melt ice in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees C has been developed with a view to preventing winter travel chaos in Scotland.

The product was tested on hard-packed snow in Aberdeenshire recently and results were said to be "successful", by Transport Scotland.

Transport minister Keith Brown said: "Last December we faced an unprecedented situation with the coldest weather for 100 years and it's right we continue to explore ways of continually improving our capacity to respond to severe weather."

Supplies of the new solution are expected to be distributed across the country at strategic points for use when traditional salt stocks have been deemed ineffective.

It has been considered as part of the government's six-point plan to reduce incidents of travel chaos when adverse weather conditions strike, which will also see mobile sensors used to monitor the condition of surfaces and increased availability of CCTV cameras to examine what is happening on the roads.

More information is expected to be posted about weather conditions to help commuters and other travellers make informed decisions about whether heading out during bad spells is the right thing to do.

Holiday insurance policyholders hoping to jet off from one of Scotland's airports might be pleased to hear a forum of experts has been set up to prevent similar scenes of travel chaos.

Mr Brown recently met with operators including Highlands and Island Airports and BAA to discuss how they expect to cope should the weather take a turn for the worse, as it did during the later months of 2010.
