Travellers need not miss out on creature comforts when embarking on a round-the-world trip.
Travelling around the world often conjures up images of heavy backpacks and overcrowded hostels - but more young professionals are breaking the mould and making the trip without forgoing any creature comforts.
Brett Warbrick, group marketing and product director at Round the World Experts, explained that 'flash-packers' are skipping dormitory rooms in favour of five-star hotels with plenty of amenities.
"For some people, backpacking is all about escaping normal life and getting back to basics," he continued, adding that there are still plenty of options available for people who do not want to follow the usual routes.
This increase in tourists arriving with higher expectations has improved the quality of accommodation and services in many destinations.
Couples with older children and workers on career breaks are among the new generation of backpackers enjoying round-the-world excursions, Mr Warbrick remarked.
"The level of comfort people expect when they travel is down to personal preference and it should always be something to take into consideration when planning your trip," the expert concluded.
Mexico has proven a popular stop recently, according to Leah Griffin, destinations manager for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean at Gap Adventures.
She said the Chichen Itza is worth a look, while anyone searching for a more authentic experience could head to the country's markets where traditional food is plentiful.
Ms Griffin added that she too had noticed more travellers seeking out an alternative experience when setting off on holiday.
Anyone considering a round-the-world break - whether they are heading abroad with a knapsack or trolley case - should check out the
backpacker travel insurance options available before leaving the UK.
