More people choose to stay in the UK rather than jetting off abroad.
The number of people who are opting to stay at home and take holidays in the domestic environment is on the increase as the economic downturn, coupled with the fact that many people are struggling with the rising costs of living, means more are choosing to be more frugal with their holidaying.
VisitEngland has released its latest figures, which represent holidays taken in England on an overnight basis, and they have shown that the number of people taking holidays in England on travel insurance policies in the first six months of 2011 showed an increase of four per cent compared to the first half of 2010.
The figures also focused on the summer period, which is the busiest period for Brits holidaying either at home or abroad, and found that there were 17.8 million holidays undertaken in Britain. This showed another increase, with three per cent more people choosing England as their summer destination than they did a year before.
However, while it has been said that many are feeling the pinch this year, and cannot afford to spend as much on their holidays, this trend is being bucked by people holidaying at home, who are spending 12 per cent more in the 2011 than they did in 2010.
Meanwhile, the Association of British Travel Agents recently reported that the number of Brits heading abroad this winter is totalling 4.25 million, 250,000 more than last year.
VisitEngland's chief executive James Berresford said: "It is heartening that the number of people choosing to take a holiday in England remains above pre-recession levels. It is vital that we continue to work very hard together to maintain this trend as we approach one of the most potentially exciting years for English tourism."
