Montserrat offers holidaymakers a genuine alternative to the Caribbean, an expert has said.
The Montserrat Tourist Board (MTB) has urged British people seeking a trip to the Caribbean this
summer to consider visiting the island.
With the Caribbean Tourism Organisation anticipating a bounce-back in visitor numbers this year following the recession and positive figures from the final quarter of 2009, the organisation has said that Montserrat offers a unique and relaxing experience.
Kylie Jenkins, public relations consultant to the MTB, describes the island as being "reminiscent of how the Caribbean used to be before mass tourism".
"With a population of about 4,500 people you can pretty much escape by yourself," she added.
The upcoming 15th anniversary of the first Soufriere Hills volcanic eruption for more than 400 years offers yet more reason to visit the island as it is something of a modern-day Pompeii.
Seeing the damage caused by the eruption is best achieved by taking a boat tour around its capital city of Plymouth, Ms Jenkins added. Meanwhile, Montserrat also offers ideal conditions for bird watching, rum touring and hiking.
It is advisable for anyone travelling to the Caribbean this
summer to take out
travel insurance before leaving the UK.
