Mombasa 'has relaxed and friendly atmosphere'

Tourists looking for a break with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere have been advised to head to Mombasa in Kenya.

Holidays in Kenya have been recommended to tourists who want to go on a break to a destination with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Angie Sloan, Kenya Tourist Board UK director, stated that the city is spread out across Mombasa Island and is the second biggest metropolis in the African nation, after its capital Nairobi.

"Fort Jesus is a must-see attraction in Mombasa," she said.

"It was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and served as a transit point for the slave trade. Its monumental architecture is steeped in history and the fort houses a museum, displaying a selection of interesting artefacts from its past."

Ms Sloan also recommended those who book holidays to the African country go to Mombasa's Hindu temples of Mombasa during their time in the city.

She explained that these are bound to be a highlight of any break in the location and offer a "fascinating insight into the diversity of Kenya's religious history".

Local guides are also on hand for tourists who want to be led around the temples rather than make their own way around, added Ms Sloan.

The Kenya Tourist Board UK director also pointed out that Mombasa can boast the oldest harbour in East Africa, so those who book trips to the Kenyan city may also wish to spend some time there.

According to figures released earlier in the month by the Kenya Tourist Board, tourist numbers in January 2011 were up by more than 40 per cent on the corresponding period from the previous year.
