Medical problems 'a top cause of insurance claims'
Medical insurance should be the "biggest point of call" for travel insurance customers heading on a short break, an insurance provider has advised.
"People don't understand that when they go abroad, especially Europe, they'll patch you up but you won't get a free ticket home," explained Perry Wilson, founder of InsureandGo.
A study by the company revealed medical problems were among the top five problems British holidaymakers experienced while on their travels in 2008.
Some 14 per cent of British people went on a foreign holiday last year without taking out an insurance policy and problems ended up costing travellers close to £90 million.
Mr Wilson went on to say that people who go away more than once a year on longer holidays or shorter weekend breaks should consider taking out an annual travel insurance policy as it could work out more cost-effective.
A survey by Aldi Travel in January revealed some 82 per cent of Brits believed a good holiday was "crucial" to maintain wellbeing.
Cheap travel insurance from Direct Travel Insurance could be one way to keep total holiday expenditure down.
