Malaga is "perfectly Spanish" and a low-cost holiday option
Often overlooked as a tourist destination by people booking package holidays, Malaga is in fact "an ideal city to do 'on the cheap'", wrote Stephen Emms in the Observer.
Mr Emms headed to Playa del Palo in the Spanish city, to a beachside resort named El Tintero.
Malaga can be reached by many budget airlines, he explained, but the city itself remains "perfectly Spanish" with reasonable prices.
According to Mr Emms, a glass of wine or beer comes to an average of 1.50 to 2 (£1.29 to £1.71) and a three course meal at lunch can be found for between 8 and 9.
To keep costs down, he suggested avoiding staying over on a Saturday night - when hotel prices often rise.
Sightseeing can also come cost-free with no entrance fees to many galleries and museums and free entry available to attractions such as the Alcazaba Moorish Fortress and the Gilbralfaro Castle on Sunday afternoons.
Malaga is also home to the Picasso Museum, which opened in 2003 in the birthplace of the famous artist.
Taking out a travel insurance policy when travelling to Spain can cover events such as lost or stolen baggage, medical expenses, emergency medical transportation and trip cancellation.
