Make flying abroad with kids easier

Choosing a family friendly airport can reduce the stress levels of taking a holiday.

When you are flying abroad for a holiday, be it in the summer or for a spot of winter sunshine, one of the biggest stresses can be keeping the kids happy while waiting in the airport to make sure they do not cause you to have a frustrating start to your trip.

This is why, according to one travel commentator, it is vitally important for those who have a young family, to make sure that the airport they are flying from is family friendly, with plenty of activities and amenities to keep the kids entertained and well fed, especially in the event of delays to your flight times.

Travel journalist James Ellis has said that doing a little bit of research can be key to reducing any potential stress levels, as many UK airports will offer good facilities for those travel insurance policyholders who are flying with youngsters.

Recently, SkyScanner conducted a survey to find out which airports those in the UK felt were the most family friendly. Top of the list was Edinburgh Airport, which was ranked as great for those with kids, as it offers a range of activities.

Glasgow Airport also scored well on the list, as Scottish airports outperformed their English counterparts. However, the country's biggest airport, Heathrow, was found to not be particularly friendly for those travelling with kids.

"You need good information and decent facilities for families, baby changing facilities for those with younger kids are really important, soft play areas for kids of all ages, which some airports have, and things that would appeal to early teens as well like games rooms," said Mr Ellis.

He also said that parents can help themselves by taking the time out to pack a few essentials for the kids before they leave for their trip, perhaps bringing games and colouring books to keep the little ones happy.
