Venice is a popular location for many tourists, although it can sometimes be expensive.
Travel insurance policyholders keen to save a bit of money during their break could look at a variety of accommodation options.
A press office spokeswoman from the Municipality of Venice suggests those visiting the Italian city might consider a stay on the mainland if they want to put aside some pennies.
Doing so tends to be much cheaper and there is plenty of overnight accommodation in areas such as Mestre, Marghera and Chioggia, which are all within easy reach of Venice via public transport.
"Or there are of course cheaper accommodations in Venice Island such as one and two star hotels or B&B outside the main tourist area that attract a lesser tax," the representative notes.
She commented after it was revealed that a bed tax will be introduced in the popular Italian destination and some commentators worry this could deter tourists.
The spokeswoman believes it is too soon to judge whether this is the case, as the levy does not come into force until August 24th.
"So far there have only been some concerns from tour operators regarding the fact that they have already produced brochures for next year without taking account of the tax," she remarks.
Its sum will vary according to the season, location and category of hotel, but the maximum cost stands at five euros for five-starred hotels in high season, although it is thought to be much less for many other spots.
A recent press release from STR Global found the European hotel industry posted positive results in year-on-year data for June 2011.
Venice saw a 20.5 per cent growth to reach 81.1 per cent occupancy rates, the data revealed.
