"Lying by the pool can wait" when visiting Malta
With over 5,000 years of history and ancient temples older than the Egyptian pyramids, the country has more to offer travellers than simply lounging on the beach, according to a travel writer.
The megalithic Ggantija temples - thought to be one of the oldest buildings in the world - were built before Stonehenge between 3,600 and 3,000 BC - yet are "absurdly uncelebrated", writes Juliet Rix in the Times.
Situated on Gozo, the second largest island in Malta, the two temples are enclosed by a circular boundary wall that reaches over six metres tall.
Ms Rix also visited a 5,000-year-old necropolis located ten metres underground at the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. Only ten visitors are permitted to explore the passageways per hour which lead to the "holy of Holies" - an ancient temple dedicated to those who were buried there.
"This is unique, lying by the pool can wait" she adds.
