The Highways Agency has predicted possible commuter misery as a result of freezing temperatures.
Constantly plummeting temperatures and fresh snow may contribute to more commuter misery over the next day or so, which could ruin some individuals' Christmas travel plans.
The
Highways Agency in particular has warned drivers to take care when travelling today (December 21st) as freezing conditions overnight may have contributed to ice forming on road surfaces overnight.
Yorkshire, the Humber, north-west and north-east England could be affected, as well as the East and West Midlands, according to the body. Gritters and snow ploughs have been out combating the weather, but motorists are warned it may not be enough.
Holiday insurance policyholders looking to embark on a journey over the next few days should stock their car with warm clothing, food, de-icer, a shovel and a torch, which could all prove vital if the vehicle becomes stuck or stranded.
What's more, drivers should not assume a road that has been spread with grit will not freeze over again - the Highways Agency has confirmed exceptionally low temperatures can result in fresh ice forming, particularly on hills or where trees overhang the road.
Commuters might want to follow the body's advice to use a high gear and low speed while travelling on ice or snow, while sudden breaking, sharp turns and acceleration should be avoided.
Meanwhile, the Scottish government has stated people looking to travel during severe weather conditions should heed the advice of their local police force and other authorities and consider whether their journey is absolutely essential before leaving the house.
