Visitors to China should look beyond its cities for a taste of its true culture, according to one expert.
Britons considering booking their
holiday insurance for a trip to China may do well to avoid the big cities and venture inland into less populated areas.
According to Gap Adventures managing director John Warner, this is one of the best ways of seeing the country.
"Beijing and Shanghai are utterly fascinating and destinations in their own right; however, go further afield and visitors will discover that each area has its own unique customs, history and even food," he explains.
He also recommends taking the time to visit Xi'an to see the Terracotta Army, as well as heading to the Three Gorges and Hong Kong.
In the case of Hong Kong, it is often overlooked because it is not seen as offering a real taste of Chinese culture, but this is a misconception, Mr Warner comments.
The Chinese National Tourism Administration recently revealed that the recent Spring Festival - which marks the beginning of the new year in the country - attracted 125 million tourists to the country in total.
