Less traditional destinations 'offer good value for money'
Opting for a holiday destination that is "off the beaten track is one way to ensure getting good value for money", said to a travel website.
Recent research from Expedia.co.uk revealed less traditional destinations such as Latvia, Poland, Croatia and Slovakia are becoming increasingly popular with British travellers.
Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at Expedia.co.uk, said the appeal of these countries was their value for money and "the fact that they're both relatively unexplored by tourists".
He added that people were venturing outside of their normal holiday destinations in search of new and exciting experiences and adventures.
Other locations that saw an increase in popularity because of their cost included South Africa and Hong Kong.
Between 2003 and 2007, Latvia saw a 1,164 per cent increase in trips by UK tourists and visits to Poland grew by 719 per cent to 402,000.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, replacing stolen passports and hospitalisations were among the most common incidences that required consular assistance in Poland between 2006 and 2007. Fully comprehensive travel insurance is recommended when travelling to eastern Europe.
