Late travel insurance purchases 'on the up'

An increasing number of people are now purchasing their holiday insurance later than they were two years ago, according to new research.

InsureandGo estimated that of all the travel insurance policies sold by companies in the UK in January this year, about 796,000 were bought within three days of the consumer going on the holiday.

It approximated that since January 2007, there has been a 25 per cent decrease in the length of time between a policy being purchased and the buyer taking their vacation.

"People are buying their insurance at the last minute a lot more this winter than they have done in the last two years," commented Perry Wilson, InsureandGo's founder.

He stated that the trend probably indicates that a growing number of people are booking their holidays at short notice in an effort to take advantage of special late offers.

Earlier this month, Chris Rolland of American Express urged consumers to make sure they do not cut back on travel insurance in order to save money during the recession.ADNFCR-2301-ID-19091225-ADNFCR
