It's not too cold to cruise in January, says expert

There are plenty of destinations where you can find some winter sun

If you're feeling a bit depressed about going back to work and already suffering from a bout of the January blues, then now could be the perfect time to buy some travel insurance and plan a trip abroad for the end of the month.

And even though it's winter, a cruise could be the perfect holiday choice for this time of year, whether you're after some sun or fancy a spot of adventure.

Sarah Woods, a travel expert from the Alan Titchmarsh Show, claims that there are several holiday destinations where holidaymakers can enjoy balmy temperatures on their cruise

She says: "UK cruise-goers either stick to Mediterranean Europe in the New Year for a shorter duration closer to home or opt for a cruise around the Caribbean - often with additional ports in Central and South America - if time and distance and cost are no object."

Ms Woods points out that the Caribbean and South and Central America all average around 28 to 32 degrees C in January and February, perfect if you're after a bit of winter sun.

But if you're a little more financially constrained and are willing to cruise in cooler temperatures, a Mediterranean cruise taking in ports such as Florence, Rome, Barcelona, Seville and the Balearic islands might be a better option.

Because even though you might not get the chance to top up your tan, there are excellent opportunities for sight-seeing and soaking up the local culture on these cruises, while the prices tend to be very reasonable.

However, if you fancy going out of your comfort zone and trying something a little bit different this January, you may want to consider a cruise to the chilly waterways of Russia or Norway.

Ms Woods adds: "Another good-value option is the waterways of Scandinavia and Russia - chilly in the winter months - so not an option for sun-seekers - but popular with anyone keen to discover ancient cities and do some dog sledding, snow-walking or snowmobiling."
