Industry expert says Thailand's popularity is returning

Thailand is becoming popular again with holidaymakers after its recent troubles, an expert has said.

Thailand is a traditionally popular destination for backpackers from all over the world as it offers great weather conditions, stunning scenery and fabulous beaches all at low prices.

However, the Asian country's recent political instability caused a marked decline in visitor numbers there earlier this year as travellers steered away from the potentially dangerous situation.

However, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has recently (July 2nd) unveiled a new range of strategies, activities, projects and promotions in order to re-attract visitors - and Neil Alobaidi, commercial director for global tour operator Hayes & Jarvis, has commented that these measures seem to be working.

For example, in a bid to win back its previous levels of popularity, the government has extended a waiver of tourist visa fees until March 31st of next year as well as encouraging the nation's hoteliers to offer discounted rates and value-added incentives.

And Mr Alobaidi said that this proactive stance towards getting people back to the region is an excellent idea.

"Thailand has now turned the corner and bookings for Phuket and Koh Samui are exceptionally strong," he remarked.

He added that most long-haul destinations from the UK had struggled this year due to a variety of factors, including the effects of the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud, fluctuating exchange rates and airline strikes.

But official statistics seem to back the director up with regards to Thailand's popularity, as flights arriving at Suvarnabhumi International Airport were down 6.8 per cent in June in comparison to the same month last year, while in May, the total amount of arrivals was 19 per cent lower than in May 2009.

Anyone considering a trip to Thailand this summer might want to consider taking out travel insurance before they leave home.

Holiday Insurance from Direct Travel Insurance can cover a trip to «Thailand» or other long-haul destinations all for a low price.
