'Importance of travel insurance' for South Africa revealed
New research has indicated that UK holidaymakers in South Africa made some 20,000 travel insurance claims last year.
The figures, compiled by InsureandGo, revealed that the total value of these claims was estimated to be £5.51 million.
Furthermore, the insurer predicted the rate of claims made by travellers in South Africa may increase "significantly" this year thanks to the British and Irish Lions rugby tour of the country.
"We all want people travelling to South Africa to support the Lions team to have the time of their lives, but our figures demonstrate how often insurance claims have to be made and how expensive they can be," said the firm's managing director Gary Lockett.
He added that it is essential for anyone planning a holiday to make sure they have adequate travel insurance cover before they set off.
Insurer Axa reported last month that consumers need to be aware of what activities their travel insurance policy does and does not cover.
The firm said the most dangerous sports may fall outside the cover offered by a conventional travel insurance policy and suggested that thrill-seekers should investigate whether they require additional specialist cover.
