Hvar island "a perfect balance"
The island of Hvar in Croatia has been described as "my kind of town" by a former television producer and author.
Maeve Haran, writing for the Telegraph, said that Hvar offered travellers the ideal combination: "Sunbathing quietly during the day before getting dressed up to compete with the types whose yachts adorn the Venetian harbour."
With an area of only 299 square kilometres, the Adriatic island has plenty to offer in terms of history and sights, Ms Haran added.
Visitors who are new to the island should head out to the famous Blue Grotto, she advised, but snorkelers should keep an eye out for sea urchins.
The small fish restaurants on the tiny Pakleni Islands were named as her favourite places for lunch and can be reached by water taxi from the harbour.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, approximately 267,000 Brits travel to Croatia each year. Visitors are advised to carry their passport at all times and to take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance.
