A hurricane is expected to hit parts of the US over the coming days.
Travel insurance policyholders heading to the US over the coming days are being warned of a hurricane that is moving towards the country.
The
Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) notes parts of the Caribbean have also been subjected to warnings over the storm.
Hurricane Irene is set to move across parts of Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas on August 22nd and 23rd, as well as the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Airports in the latter nations were set to close at 21:00 local time last night (August 22nd).
It is then thought that the hurricane will reach Florida on August 25th, with British nationals in the area told to follow the advice of local authorities and tour operators.
Michael Ferrari, director for climate modelling at Falls Church, told Bloomberg: "There is a potential for about 25 per cent of the Georgia crop to be impacted."
If this is the case, it could result in some $2.2 billion (£1.33 billion) worth of losses, an initial estimate from risk modelling firm Kinetic Analysis Corp warned.
Hurricane Irene has maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour and it has intensified to a category two storm, the
US National Hurricane Center noted.
The FCO reveals the hurricane season tends to run between June and November and can result in problems for the whole of the southern part of the US.
Heavy rain, strong winds and flooding are expected from the latest storm to hit the nation, the body adds.
Visitors to the country would be wise to check updates on the situation and ensure they have a valid travel insurance policy before embarking on their trip.
