Holidaymakers have been offered a number of tips from the Tourism Sustainability Council about how to be eco-conscious while travelling.
People who are planning a trip to a World Heritage site or other renowned locations may wish to consider some tips from the Tourism Sustainability Council before they make their booking.
The organisation noted that as some sites are at risk due to a combination of factors - including unsustainable management and an increased number of travellers - holidaymakers should think about how they can enjoy a trip while making the smallest impact.
Erika Harms, executive director of the TSC, said that holidaymakers should first consider their tour operator before booking and opt for the one that has the most sustainable practices.
"The traveller has in the first instance the ability to choose a destination that is well managed as well as a provider that is more sustainable," she commented.
Once they arrive at their destination, travellers should take steps to reduce their environmental impact by being aware of the resources they use - including waste, energy and water - and by following the destination-specific tips offered by the World Heritage Alliance.
Jaisalmer in India was named as one of the destinations on travel magazine Wanderlust's Threatened Wonders list.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises all holidaymakers to take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before enjoying a trip to India.
