Holidays 'are one of the last luxuries to be given up'
The British holiday trend could be moving away from people taking a number of city breaks due to the fact that holidaymakers are no longer seeing budget airlines as being as cheap as they used to be, said Ian Bradley, a spokesperson for the Association of Independent Travel Operators (AITO).
"Two years ago people might have decided 'let's get a cheap flight and hop over to Paris or Madrid or Barcelona for a long weekend'," he explained.
But now people may be deciding to take one long holiday instead, he added.
Mr Bradley believed that people have the mindset that they will not give up their summer foreign holiday as they believe they have deserved it by working all year round.
He continued that holidays are often one of the final luxuries to go when people tighten their purse strings - choosing to give up other items instead such as new kitchens and extensions on their homes.
Depending on whether Brits take one break or several holidays a year, a single trip travel insurance policy or an annual trip travel insurance policy could be more cost effective.
According to figures from Travelodge, people are expecting to spend £567 on their holiday in 2009 compared to £631 a year ago.
