Holidaymakers urged to be honest with travel insurance
Holidaymakers are being told to make sure they do not withhold information when buying travel insurance.
Sainsbury's Travel Insurance warned this week that people are at risk of paying hefty healthcare bills when holidaying abroad if they are not truthful with their insurance providers, as this can make policies invalid.
"Withholding key information such as any medical conditions could
mean your cover may be invalidated and in the worst of cases, this could mean facing large hospital bills or arranging your own repatriation," said Sam Marrs, manager at the insurance provider.
The comments came as Sainsbury's revealed that 1.3 million people have gone abroad without telling their insurance providers about pre-existing medical conditions in the last 12 months alone.
Of this number, 267,000 had heart problems and 149,000 suffered from cancer.
Earlier this year, Sainsbury's Travel Insurance predicted a rise in the number of Brits holidaying at home in 2009, but warned problems such as theft and delayed flights can still occur in the UK.
Cheap holiday insurance from Direct Travel Insurance could be one way to keep total holiday expenditure down.
