Holidaymakers booking online 'must check they are covered'
Travellers who book their own holidays must be careful to check that they are covered in case things go wrong, the Travel Association (Abta) has warned.
"People need to know what they are booking. A lot of companies out there, including some airlines where you book separate flights to the accommodation - quite often [aren't] a package," said Frances Tuke, spokesperson for Abta.
Ms Tuke went on to say that people may wish to use a credit card or take out a low-cost travel insurance policy that will cover any eventuality.
The warning followed the collapse of Freedom Direct Holidays last week (April 16th), which is estimated to have affected approximately 9,000 bookings.
Protection from the government in these circumstances is not clear and often not comprehensive, explained Ms Tuke, who stressed the importance of enquiring about insurance when booking a holiday.
Last September, XL Holidays also collapsed causing chaos for many travellers.
Cheap travel insurance from Direct Travel Insurance could be one way to keep total holiday expenditure down.
