With finances squeezed, many may opt for the cheaper activities.
With 2011 having been a tough year for many Brits, and the outlook for 2012 not looking greatly improved, many people shopping for travel insurance may be looking for the best ways to holiday on a budget in the New Year while still enjoying themselves in the process.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) report earlier this week, British consumers, while not necessarily looking for the cheapest holidays, will be looking for those which are the best value for what they can spend. It said that many will be looking for holidays with activities and experiences, giving them a lot to do.
One expert says that in order to achieve this kind of holiday, British consumers may not even need to leave the comfort of their own country.
According to Laura Smith, destination public relations manager at VisitEngland, people who want to holiday in England can afford to splash out a little more on hotels and bed and breakfasts as they go around the UK, saving money on the copious activities for all the family along the way.
Ms Smith said that there are many cheap or free attractions in England which can offer people the chance to enjoy history with their family, and give them a unique holiday experience.
"From the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester to the Merseyside Maritime Museum and London's Imperial War Museum, England has world-class interactive museums for families – plus all of these are absolutely free," she said.
As well as the free activities, Ms Smith also said that people can take advantage of the fact that places where people can pay for attractions are bolstering their offers to attract more visitors.
"These additional offerings make it easy to spend a whole day at the attraction, making it a great value day out."
