Tourists looking for a destination that boasts responsible credentials might be pleased with one Thailand resort.

Those jetting off abroad with their environmental conscience firmly in place might want to check out the credentials of one Thailand holiday resort, as it has won an award for its sustainable endeavours.

The Sarojin scooped the top prize in the Thailand Green Awards 2010, which were organised by the country's tourism authority as well as responsibletravel.com.

Not only does the accommodation boast personal dining opportunities, a library and shop, comfortable rooms and a spa where visitors can relax and enjoy any number of holistic treatments, but it provides employment opportunities to local people and remains committed to improving the economy of the surrounding community.

Justin Francis, managing director of responsibletravel.com and organiser of the judging process in the contest, said: "The Sarojin provides a brilliant example of a luxury resort remaining true to its local community during a crisis."

He pointed out that after the 2004 tsunami, the owners remained dedicated to those living in the surrounding area and stayed "close to their environmental principles".

Education and healthcare has been provided thanks to the establishment of the Khao Lak Community Fund, which has also been put to use in maintaining the Sarojin's carbon and energy consumption reduction targets.

Holiday insurance policyholders might also want to check out what is on offer at the Aleenta Resort and Spa in Phangnga, which took the Best Small Hotel award.

And families who have been put off long-haul travel as a result of high prices might be pleased to hear that research from villarenters.com has seen more British travellers book into villas in Thailand as an alternative to paying for a hotel.
