Holiday essentials 'forgotten by 65% of Brits'
The Brits are not an organised nation when it comes to packing for their summer holiday, a new report has revealed.
According to Abbey, holidaymakers travelling from the UK spend a total of £1 billion once they get to their destination, replacing items they have forgotten to bring with them.
Cameras were at the top of the list of things people forget, followed by swimwear, clothing for bad weather, mobile phones, credit cards and sunglasses.
Some 65 per cent of UK travel insurance customers forgot to take one of their "holiday essentials" in 2008, with the cost of replacing them ranging from an average of £39 to £51.
"With British holidaymakers forking out the astonishing sum of £1 billion pounds ... we should maybe all just take a few extra minutes this summer to ensure we've packed everything we need before setting off for the airport," advised Callum Gibson, head of credit cards at the company.
Forgetting to buy travel insurance could leave people with an even more expensive holiday than they had bargained for.
Statistics from Axa indicated the average cost of a medical claim from travellers visiting the USA amounted to £1,702 and £740 for holidaymakers in Australia.
