Families have been warned that a last-minute half-term break abroad could cost over the odds.
Those considering taking a family holiday abroad this half-term may end up paying more than they would like to, it has been warned.
According to Santander Cards, half-term overseas holidays leap by 249 per cent in price compared with the following week.
For example, a family of four travelling to Lanzarote is likely to spend almost £4,000 more on a package holiday during the mid-term break than those heading to the region in the week after.
However, lower holiday premiums may be possible when it comes to destinations such as Crete, Santander Cards said.
This could particularly be the case if travellers manage to find cheap
holiday insurance.
Emma Roberts, director at Santander Cards, remarked: "Our research shows that parents with children of school age face a massive premium if they want to take their children away during the half-term break."
According to the Post Office, 4.8 million Britons are expected to head overseas this half-term, with 20 per cent of these likely to neglect to buy travel insurance before they set off.
